Increase Work Productivity in 5 Ways

Increase Work Productivity in 5 Ways

Even if you don’t set formal resolutions for the new year, you probably have some things you’d like to improve. One thing that everyone could use is more time to get things done during the day. You can’t bend the laws of time, but you can learn how to increase work productivity.

How You Can Increase Work Productivity

You don’t have to reinvent the wheel to improve your productivity. These five simple tips can help you get more done during your day.

1. Prioritize Your Schedule

Make a list of the things you need to get done and organize them. Take tasks that don’t take long and complete them first thing to jump-start your productivity. Identify the most important things you need to get done. Be aware of any deadlines you have to make. Also, note the things that will take you the longest to complete.

The most important tasks should be definitely be prioritized so you get them done by your deadline. You should also schedule big tasks for the time of day when you’re most alert and able to focus. Some people knock things out more easily first thing in the morning. Other people get an afternoon surge in productivity.

2. Give Up on Multitasking

The theory behind multitasking is that you can get more done when you’re working on more than one task at once. Efficient, right? Wrong. According to Psychology Today, research on multitasking overwhelmingly finds that it’s less efficient than focusing on single tasks.

When you multitask, you are actually switching between many tasks quickly rather than working on them at the same time. And you’re likely losing ground each time you jump from task to task. So, if you want to increase your work productivity, focus on one task at a time.

3. Organize to Cut Down on Clutter

Another good way to increase productivity is to organize and get rid of clutter. A cluttered workspace can distract you and interrupt your focus. Find an organization system that works for you. Spend a bit of time each day making sure you are keeping things tidy and in their correct spot.

4. Take Breaks

Believe it or not, working straight through the day is not going to help you increase work productivity. If you aren’t giving yourself regular breaks, you’re more likely to get distracted and get off track while trying to complete tasks. Instead, plan short breaks throughout the day.

The Pomodoro Technique is a very popular time-management method that helps people. You set a timer and work for 25-30 minutes. When the timer goes off, you stop and take a two to three-minute break. After a few intervals, you can take a longer break.

Even if you don’t want to use timed intervals, breaks are still important. If you’re struggling to get through a task, it might be time to drop it for a while. Do whatever it is that helps you clear your mind. Then go back to it later when your mind is refreshed.
